How Do We Stop Mass Murder?

October 28, 2018

After the murders at the Pittsburg Synagogue, I keep seeing this question on Quora; ‘How do we stop mass murder?’

Most of the people asking this question feel strongly about things they don’t understand. They have not studied the issues of physical defense or contemporary mental health. I’m sorry to give them the bad news, but there is no magic button to fix the human condition. There is hope.

We can not eliminate mass murder, but we can reduce it.

    1. We developed mass murderers after we developed mass media. Stop rewarding narcissistic murderers with a billion dollars of publicity.
    2. Almost all mass murders are in so called “gun-free” zones. Make the government strictly liable for every injury in a government mandated “gun-free” zone.
    3. Make owners/operators strictly liable for every injury in a privately mandated “gun-free” zones.

I’m tempted to add that we should hold bureaucrats responsible for the crazy people they release back into society, but we have never found a way to hold bureaucrats responsible. To claim that as a solution is magical thinking and this isn’t a blog about speculative fiction.

The three things I mentioned won’t end the problem of mass murder, but they will help a lot. If you doubt that conclusion, then please consider this;

Is there any “gun-free” zone where we have not found a gun?
I have not found a single one.

I’ve also heard people propose more background checks and more bureaucratic “no-buy” lists. That sounds too good to be true..and it is. Gun prohibition would disarm an honest citizen like me, but prohibition has not stopped criminals or determined murderers.

I’d love to hear your comments. RM

Start teaching morals again and removing any mention of God from the public sphere. Stop making guns the villain and allow kids to learn about them so that they are no longer the strange and desirable “other.” Do all the stuff he talked about above and stop acting like there is no such thing as right and wrong in society. None of these things will eliminate mass murder but it will do much more than another gun control law. If there are 10,000 gun control laws you could probably repeal 9,999 of them and not see an appreciable rise in mass murder, I know there are far more than that! Improve mental health treatment and screening is another area that could stand improvement, that is something that should be able to be worked on outside the gun debate, provided the left doesn’t immediately try tie it to gun and gun owner bans. There is a few more words to chew on

I firmly believe the drugs in our society are affecting this behavior. If not the root cause. Nobody wants to address it due to the mega-donations to DC.

I don’t know if you are speaking of legal or illegal drugs but in either case I would have to agree with you. The over prescription of Ritalin as well as some of the side effects of anti-depressant use by adolescents are both subjects for several posts on many different blogs. This doesn’t even get into the miss use of prescription drugs or other “recreational” drug use prevalent in today’s society by those of all ages. How did we let it get this bad?

Agree this is a very important factor. Look at how child soldiers are trained. Abuse, desensitization, and drugs to remove the barriers to killing another. Mix in the motivation of being a celebrity and there you have it.

The sad fact is you can’t stop every lone wolf who is a first time offender. Even if all the guns could be banned, there are plenty of other methods available to kill a lot of people thanks to the internet – i.e things like pipe bombs (San Bernardino, pressure cooker bombs (Boston), propane tank bombs (Columbine), truck bombs (Oklahoma City), exotic battery bombs (Austin, TX), Molotov cocktails (Arapahoe High School), gasoline cans and a match (Happy Land fire on 3/25/90), heavy truck crashing in to a crowd of people (Nice, France), home made flame throwers made from plumbing parts and gasoline (nowhere – yet) and any pressure vessel filled with shrapnel and gun powder manufactured the same way it has been since the 6th century that will momentarily confine an explosive pressure wave. And when any of those things are used and there are no civilian firearms to deter the government from limiting our Bill of Rights, it’s likely no one will know about them because at that point in order to silence any criticism for actions they can’t control and to maintain civilian support and power, the government has no reason to allow them to be reported. In other words, banning things like “assault weapons” and standard capacity magazines just starts us down the road of incessant, progressive bans on other firearms with the end result being that only criminals and the government will have guns

In every instance of mass shooting the perpetrators stop when confronted with armed force and are wounded, killed, captured, or flee to avoid capture. It comes down to a question of how quickly that armed resistance can present itself. Law enforcement will do their best, but they are often minutes if not hours away from an event.
Of course the Brits came up with their own solution. They ban all handguns and most long arms from public ownership, something our own gun control crowd can only dream about. And as a result the UK has a violent crime rate only five times that of the United States.

Stop mass murder by the swift application of individual justified defensive homicide.

How about we pass legislation making it unlawful to murder people?

That makes as much sense as any other really stupid ideas floating around.

2….Make the government strictly liable for every injury in a government mandated “gun-free” zone.
The problem with that is if the government is found liable, ultimately the taxpayer pays any fine or restitution. Maybe make them carry insurance, the premiums would cost the taxpayer less than million-dollar settlements.
