Are School Shootings a Mountain or a Molehill?

May 21, 2018

The things we don’t know are fascinating. Judging by recent news reports, we should keep our children at home so they won’t be killed by a crazy kid with a gun at school. On the other hand and again judging by the news reports, we should send our kids to a “gun free” school simply to get them out of any home that might have a legally owned gun on the premises. Neither claim is true, but they are entirely understandable if you reached the wrong conclusion by watching the “news”. The media lies to us as they struggle to sell advertising. Let’s look at the facts, and I’ll show you my sources at the end of the article.

27 students and staff were killed by mass murderers in US schools this year. That is revolting.  It shocks us as it should. It is also true that we don’t know how to make sense of that number. There are almost 327 million of us here in the United States. 57 million attend school in grades K through 12.  Is 27 murders a large number or a small one? How many of us die by other causes?

Let’s put the numbers into perspective. 156 people were murdered by gunfire in Chicago this year. There are only 9.6 million people living in the Chicago metropolitan area. It is an interesting comparison, but the results are shocking.

chicago vs schools

(It is actually 120 times, but I’ve made my point.) As fascinating as that may seem, the important question is why we didn’t know that fact already. Given the many hours of news coverage breathlessly devoted to mass murders, why didn’t the news reporters put their information into perspective for us? I don’t have proof, but I have an educated guess.

Since we’re on a roll, I’m going to put another news item into perspective. After the latest mass murder at a school in Texas, we were again told that guns kill us. It is true that guns are sometimes used in murders. In fact, there were about 11 thousand homicides with a firearm in the US in 2016. Again, we have to ask if that is a lot or a little.

The vast majority of the firearms homicides were suicides, while only a third of the homicides were murders. Both are a loss. Let’s stop to ask how many times guns saved lives. As verified by government reports, there were about 2.2 million cases a year where legal gun owners used a firearm in self-defense, though each example did not necessarily result in shots being fired.

Look at those results. Guns make us safer, and disarming us would put innocent people at greater risk. Why didn’t we read about that in the news? It appears that the media is more interested in click-bait headlines than informing their readers.

Me, I’ll leave the data right here so you can see for yourself.

I knew this was true for the most part…but I am willing to bet those on the left will find a way to rationalize away any statistic that counters their claim that guns kill.

I was approached over the weekend by a Mom, you know the kind I am referring too. She was a bit hot under the collar after this last school shooting. I was very tolerant of her bias and biting remarks which continued for a good part of the conversation.

She finally got around to asking me if I would be interested in meeting with her and a few others to discuss gun control and my views on why it doesn’t work. I was a bit surprised at the request to meet with me, considering she spent the last few minutes berating and attacking me. I asked her one thing…Is the conversation/discussion going to be anything like the last 5 minutes have been? The look on her face was telling…she had no clue what I was saying until she did, and that was after it sunk in.

The next 5 minutes culminated in a pretty open discussion which I was pleasantly surprised with. We agreed to set up a date and I asked if I could bring some reference materials…I have been printing away and hopefully won’t present info they will find biased…lol

Thank you, and good luck. I’ve been successful with more questions and fewer statistics.

An ancient fact. The Anti Gun Set will take any incident of improper or illegal use of arms to create the proverbial Tempest In A Teapot. Funny thing is that notwithstanding the facts of the matter, these “mass shootings” take place in their beloved Gun Free Zones, that siren song continues to attrach them, and in addition, it seems to attract others, who should know better, a whole lot better.

School shootings are a sad thing, however Gun Laws, the sort of laws that impact essentially on the law abiding have zero effect on the acts of nut cakes, criminals and or those who, for whatever reason, opt to disobey the laws that the general population try at least to live by. Seems that this concept of to subtle for some to grasp, either that, or it is another case of They Know Best, despite the all to clear evidence that they do not.

Mother Jones has a list of all mass shootings since 1982.

Data is from the FBI and news reports, AFAIK.
In those 36 years I counted ( IIRC) 67 school shootings.

As to the safety supposedly provided by these Gun Free Zones, the “safety” appears to be something envisioned, promised, much spoken of, but not delivered. I do,wonder as to,why that seems to be, or actually is the case.
