If Cars Were Regulated Like Guns

April 21, 2013

picture-is-worth-sum-car-partsI was listening to the radio on the way back from the auto parts store.  The politician on the radio told me how he was going to keep me safe.  What would that be like?  Most adults in the US drive a car, so what would happen if we regulated cars the way we regulate firearms.

I can make an argument for “car control”.   Even a small car is more powerful than any firearm.  Listen to the traffic reports on your way to work and you’ll hear about “car-violence” every day.  Criminals use cars to kill people so we have “car-crime”.  I know these are lame argument, but that doesn’t stop politicians.  Buckle up and take a crazy ride through car regulation land.

Are you legally eligible to own a car?

  • In this world, you need a permit to own a car.  The permit includes a national background check, a thumb print and two forms of identification before you’re allowed to buy a car.  This is because we want to keep criminal from driving.  No one drives without a permit, do they?
  • You can’t own a car if you or your wife were ever charged with yelling at each other.  That way we won’t let people who were accused of a hostile domestic outburst have access to a dangerous car.  It is worthwhile if we save one life.
  • In some states you must show that you have a locked garage before you can buy a car.  We have car storage laws because we want to make sure cars are safely kept away from children.
  • Car dealers and mechanics are federally licensed and their records are inspected each year.
  • Even if you already own several cars, there can still be a 14 day cooling off period before you can bring your new car home from the dealer.  This stops dangerous impulse driving.
  • You can only buy one car a month.
  • Police can come and seize your cars and your gasoline if you or someone living in your home are prescribed certain medicines by a doctor.  We can’t be too careful with incapacitated drivers.

What cars can you buy?

  • There are limits on the size of the car you’re allowed to own.  The car can’t be too small or too large.  Who needs a dangerous motorcycle or a truck!
  • The gas tank can not hold more than 10 gallons.
  • Portable gas cans over 10 gallons are illegal in some states.  Only arsonists need that much gasoline!
  • Once you get your car home, the gas tank must be drained, the car must be secured in a locked garage, and the gasoline must be stored in a separate locked building if children are in the home.
  • You need a special permit to own a car with a muffler.  We need loud cars so you can’t hide your driving.
  • Adjustable steering wheels and seats are outlawed in some states but not others.  Ignorance of the law is no excuse as you travel.  Get advice from your lawyer who specializes in car-law.
  • You can’t own a car that looks like a car owned by the government even though your car isn’t as powerful and doesn’t go as fast.

There are limits on gasoline.

  • In some states, you need to show your Car Owners Identification Card to buy gasoline.
  • You might be reported to state law enforcement agencies of you buy over 20 gallons of gas.  Gas kills people!
  • It could be illegal to take gasoline from one state to another because the gasoline that is legal in one state might be illegal in your neighboring state.
  • You can drive the family van at 16 years of age, but you need to be over 21 years old to buy gasoline for a small car.

There are limits on using your car.

  • You need a new car owners permit when you move to some states, and you can’t bring your car into those states until after you register it.
  • Some states will let you own a car at home, but you can’t get a permit to take it out in public.
  • Some states will let you drive across the state as long as you don’t stop.  If you break down, then the police can arrest you if you try to have your car shipped out of state.. unless your car is already registered.  This stops illegal car trafficking.
  • In some states you can’t show your car to a friend in public.  That is called brandishing.
  • Some states won’t allow you to have your car outside your home even if you keep it covered.  You need a special concealed car permit for that.  You probably need to know a politician to get one of these special permits.  You’ll have to transport your car in a locked car carrier.
  • In some states you can’t let your friend sit in your car on your own property, nor can you sit in his car on your property.  That makes me feel safer already.
  • Cars can be rented or loaned at the track, but only by car clubs that are part of an incorporated outdoor conservation organization.

I know all this sounds ridiculous, but I saved the best for last.  None of these regulations apply to politicians!  Politicians can shoot drive what whatever gun car they want because these gun car laws don’t apply to politicians and their bodyguards drivers.

Enough of crazy land.  This humorous comparison makes me wonder how much real freedom we let the government take away from us already.  I know the politicians have an explanation of why we need to have our rights taken away.  There is always a good excuse for tyranny, and there is always another public health hazard from which we need protection.

Hmm.  There is an idea.  Why, did you know that 500 people are murdered with bats and blunt objects last year?  Bats are more lethal than “assault rifles”.  Maybe we need bat registration as part of a comprehensive plan for of bat control and greater bat safety.  Does that sound crazy to you?

How about motorcycles?

Well written and a good argument for either regulating cars or reducing the regulation on fire arms. 🙂

Don’t forget the deadly liquids found throughout your cars. Not just gasoline but motor oil, brake fluid, radiator fluid and battery acids to name a few. These would have to be locked up and kept out of the reach of children and adults who have ever taken those certain medications.

    Reassembly required…

The purpose of a car is transport, the purpose of a gun is to kill. The inherent difference in the purpose and function of each should be obvious to everyone. The necessity of regulating and limiting the use of a device whose intent is to kill should also be obvious. It should also be obvious that we do regulate the use of automobiles, we have and require operators to get a license. Shouldn’t we have the same requirements to operate a gun?

Jack, if what you say is true, then it appears that cars are defective because so many cars kill, and guns are defective because so few kill.

      Both are tools.

Jack, anyone could kill anyone using either a gun or a car so your argument doesn’t work. Both are inanimate objects and can’t kill or harm someone on their own. It takes the introduction of a human being to use the gun, vehicle, bat, knife etc. in a manner in which creates harm or kills other humans. So many people argue that guns are so dangerous but that is only an ignorant fear of an inanimate object when all the while most all of us know that you could kill just as many people with a car as with a gun, maybe even more with a car if it were in a crowded area such as a fair or parade but people like you will shout to the heavens or to anyone that will listen that guns are dangerous and we shouldn’t have them until the day comes when you are faced with an intruder or a murderer or a government that has become overpowering because it convinced its people that guns are dangerous and only the government should have them. Wake up!

Cars are not included as a Constitutional right, guns are. Those same people that tell me a gun only has one purpose are the same people that don’t believe the same about a fetus.

      Jack
      1. Cars are not a constitutional right like guns are.
      2. Cars “kill” 50,000 a year and almost kill 6,000,000 a year. (That’s half of how many died in the Holocaust)
      3. Guns where historically never used to kill.
      4. Cars are used to transport terrorists so they can kill.
      5. Guns are used for
      1) Self defense (Which is 10000% better reason than transporting people, saves hundred thousands a year)
      2) Jobs (Guns create FAR more jobs than cars, and thousand times more money)
      3) Hunting (Hunting is the most humane way to get food, as well hunters donate 14 billion a year to Nature preserve.
      4) Sporting
      5) collecting
      6) Educating kids (Look how Uneducated and stupid you are. Bet if you learn gun safety you wouldn’t be so dumb)
      7) Economy (Guns create billions of dollars)

      8. The only thing we need license for are idiots like to operate a computer.

Jack, the purpose of guns for me and untold millions of others, is recreation, defense and deterrence. I don’t own my guns to kill anyone or anything, with the possible exception of paper targets. (sarcasm)

Actually Jack, guns are created as a tool to propel a bullet. Nothing more, nothing less. If they are used to kill, the person is the killer not the gun. If a car is used to kill, the person is the killer not the car. The difference is, my right to own a gun is protected by the second amendment. My right to own a car is not protected in the constitution at all.
The maximum legal limit on most highways is 75 miles per hour. If one is travelling faster, one is breaking the law. Almost every car designed is designed to break the law. There are cars that leave the dealership with the ability to do more than twice that legal limit. Let’s have some restrictions there! Why would anyone need to travel twice the legal limit when we all know it’s illegal?

In 2012 cars killed 32,885 Americans. Rifles killed 453, including 18 by military style assault rifles. Go figure.

I have carried a loaded weapon daily on my hip for over 30 years…I have even carried various military & semi automatic weapons in defense of this country…not one time, in all these years, has one of those weapons jumped up & killed anyone…not even when said weapons were being shot at, they never once fired back on their own…

We do have regulations on firearms. We also have background checks. All this talk about making background checks necessary makes me wonder if any people who talk about gun control have even done the slightest bit of research.

The argument about children being kept safely away from cars in a locked garage is flawed because you need a key to operate a car whereas a gun only needs to be loaded and the safety undone. Also, cars can’t as easily be concealed in your pocket and sneaked into areas.

Tyler, I appreciate you concern. In my county, we have many more children and teenagers killed in car accidents than in gun accidents. When my children were small, we kept both the firearms and the car keys away from children.

I’ll never forget the morning that my niece got her dad’s car keys, fired up the Regal andbacked it across the street into a ditch. She was 8. And I’ll never forget the night a drunk man, without a drivers license, in the country illegally, ran a red light in a Chevy truck and killed my little girl. How many laws did he willingly break? With all the regulations he still choose to do bad things and then made a mistake that left a toddler and her mother dead. Where were the magic government regulation enforcers to stop him before he ran the red light? Before he started that truck? Before he left a private residence heavily intoxicated? Before he snuck into California from Mexico without going throughtheproper channels? Did any of those laws do anything to save a little girl and a young woman or did those laws just make us all feel better that ” something is being done to prevent tragedies such as this”

Chris, no one should ever have to go through what you have endured. My prayers go out to you and the rest of your family. The unfortunately sad fact of the matter is that truth doesn’t matter in insanely upside-down country we have allowed to be created. There are however, a plethora of Jacks and Tylers out there trying to take away someone else’s rights to make themselves “feel” better.
