Variations on a Theme with Colonel Samuel Colt

March 31, 2013

They used to say,

“God made men, and Colonel Colt made them all equal.”

After women’s liberation they said,

“God made men and women equal, but Colonel Colt keeps them that way.”

Now that women have joined us in the shooting sports they say,

“God made men and women equal, but Colonel Colt only makes men and women equal

if they are willing to practice.

Yes, it is progress when you admit you only get out what you put in.  The same idea has been communicated other ways.  Colonel Jeff Cooper said, “Having a gun and thinking you are armed is like having a piano and thinking you are a musician.”

I don’t participate in it, but I like cowboy three-gun action shooting.  Their performance reminds me that it isn’t the equipment or the age of the shooter, but the practice they put in.  Good shooti’n.

Practice in. Perfomance out.  Those are the slow facts.
