Politicians Propose new Slogans for Safety!

January 31, 2013

“Keep guns out of schools,” the headline says.  I get it.  The saying is definitely short and pithy.  The next clever saying is “You don’t want to win a gunfight in school.”  I find that idea fascinating, if wrong.  The alternative to winning a gunfight in school is not to eliminate violence or to pursue violence somewhere else.  The real alternative is to loose a gunfight in school on the terms chosen by a madman.  Perhaps I’m being too logical.  We can take another tack and go with the clever phrases to see where it leads us.

If disarmed schools creates peace, then by analogy, we should disarm airports and airplanes.  That means no armed security screeners, no armed air marshals and no armed pilots on airplanes.  Go ahead, you get on board first.
What no takers?
If disarmed schools creates peace, then by analogy, we should disarm prisons and jails.  That means no armed guards or armed police officers.  How do you think that will work out?
But schools are different, you say.  There are only nice people at schools and that is why schools do not need to be defended.  I guess the murderers at Newtown, Virginia Tech and Columbine forgot to read the memo, or is that the new inclusive definition of nice person.

Hmm.  And sometimes, so do teachers.  When that happens, I want the teachers to win.

Analogies are generally the most useful when they compare comparable entities. Yours do not. The various guards, marshals, police officers and so forth you mention have elected to pursue a career in law enforcement, and in the occupation they chose, carrying a gun is part of the job description. So, if you were talking about coming up with the additional tax money necessary to put trained, qualified, professional law enforcement officers in every school in America, we could have a logical conversation. Arming the 3 million or so teachers in this country – many of whom want nothing to do with guns, and many of whom don’t have the temperament to safely handle a gun in dangerous situation – is not a thinking person’s solution.

B & J, you propose a bad solution, claim it is mine, and then say I’m unthinking for proposing it. I expect better discourse. Do that again and you’re banned.

Then again, you wrote some great slogans.
I banned you because your web blog is a click through site.
