News Media and Hollywood Play Pretend

August 29, 2012

I expect fantasy from Hollywood and from the main stream media.  I certainly don’t expect objective news from either.  As exhibit A, I submit David Chalian who was the Washington bureau chief for Yahoo.  Yesterday he was.  Today he isn’t.

.

.

Chalain was with a media crew capturing B-roll footage of Mitt and Ann Romney as they enter a building.  Chalain was caught by an ABC microphones saying the Romney’s would be “happy to have a party when black people drown.”  The audio is in the first 10 seconds of the video  and you have to listen closely to hear it.

I assume this was a comment in response to the Romney’s being at the Republican nominating convention while tropical storm Isaac was hitting the gulf coast.  Based on this video, there were other news crews with similar attitudes, so David Chalian thought he had a friendly audience.   Yahoo fired him when the recording was made public and Yahoo said little more.  Silence does not answer the relevant questions the media won’t ask and Yahoo would rather not answer.

Was this the first instance of Chalian’s partisan bias, or simply the first time his longstanding animosity was made public?

Is Chalian’s bias only an issue of partisan politics, or does he actually consider all whites as racist unless they are Democrats?

Was Chalain’s partisan or racial bias known and tolerated in Yahoo’s news organization?

How has Chalian’s bias distorted his reporting?  Did it skew his selection of stories and his treatment of stories?

Was his bias and racism an open secret at Yahoo?  Was it a requirement to fit into the news room culture and be hired as D.C. Bureau Chief ?

We don’t know and we won’t know.  We already knew the media was biased.  What is surprising is that media management now bothers to feign objectivity by firing David Chalian.

They didn’t fire Juan Williams when, after Ann Romney spoke at Tampa and he called her a cared for corporate wife.

They didn’t dismiss the program director at MSNBC when they took off the air any brown face at the RNC podium.  Only white speakers were broadcast.

.

.

Not when  Mia Love spoke.

.

.

.

.

.

Not when Artur Davis spoke.

.

.

.

.

Not when Brian Sandoval spoke.

.

.

.

I wonder if they will show Condolieezza Rice or Marco Rubio?

.

This behavior really isn’t new or news.  I’m used to it from Hollywood.  Samual L Jackson tweets “Unfair Shit: GOP spared by Isaac! NOLA prolly Fucked Again!”  Ellen Barkin re-tweeted the message “C’mon #Isaac! Wash every pro-life, anti-education, anti-woman, xenophobic, gay-bashing, racist SOB right into the ocean! #RNC ”

If you think these are isolated examples, then go watch Prager University on media bias with Tim Groseclose.  Here is the  Media Research Center  on media bias if you want more.  Now I remember why I don’t have TV.

You and I would not act this way because we have both liberal and conservative friends.  We don’t think the other party is evil as David Chalian evidently does.  There is a  path to redemption.  Mr. Chalian now has more time to make some new friends.
