It is all Magic to the Average Citizen

August 19, 2012

I said the Japanese panicked when they  shut down their working nuclear reactors after the 2011 earthquake and Tsunami.  Now, I’m not sure.  I don’t know if they acted out of fear or some other feeling.  I wonder if it was a primitive form of self-sacrifice, a technological blood letting.  The earthquake and Tsunami had just killed 15 to 19 thousand people.  Nighttime temperatures were near freezing in mid-March for inland Japan.  I was worried for them.

Was the orderly society of Japan overwhelmed with grief?  Did the Japanese body-politic needed a ritualistic sacrifice, a technological cleansing after the disaster?

Few people understand plate tectonics or nuclear power.  They are unknowable magic to the average Walmart shopper.  A shrewd politician would sacrifice one incomprehensible bit of magic to the other in order to mask the very real administrative failings of Tokyo Electric. Of greater importance to the politician, the sacrifice would bury the failure of government regulators who oversaw the nuclear plants.

Just a thought as I wondered about US banking and investment regulation after each US financial failure.  I’m full of questions this morning, and a wise man learns from others.

I need some encouragement so please rate, comment and share.
